From cane and wood
to sound.
Mahir Panayır works from his atelier — Çağdaş Nefesli Sazlar — in Seyhan, Adana. The work here focuses on two instruments: kaval and ney. These are instruments where breath, material and handwork all have to meet at the right point.
Cane is stored. Wood is turned. Metal parts are heated and fitted. Mouthpieces are prepared. Each instrument is tested by hand and by breath before it leaves the workshop. The result isn't a factory object. It is an instrument with a maker behind it.
